Why Won’t They Call It?

May 6th, 2008 by spangle-wxnt

Normally, with 63% of the precincts in, and an 8-point lead, the media would declare Hillary. Now, they are all talking as if she’s taken it… But they’ve done their homework.

Lake County won’t be in for a half-hour or more, and those would only be the first 20%. In Marion County, we are at 70% in, and that means we will now start to see the impact of Center Township.

Lake County and Center Township are the most populated. Without those two in, you can’t really call.

BUT! Fox News say they will project Hillary winner soon.

I am unofficially calling it for…

May 6th, 2008 by spangle-wxnt

Still No Lake County. They closed 45 minutes ago. This could mean a major shft in Presidential, but Obama is still down 20,000ish… I doubt Lake can shift 25,000 votes for Obama though…

I’d say Hillary, Jill Long-Thompson, and Andre Carson are your winners.

Looks like turn-out in Marion County will be in the mid-thirties… I think it was 11 or 12 in the Special Election. (We can’t use ANY Marion County data from last year’s primary.)

Looking at the Numbers

May 6th, 2008 by spangle-wxnt

Go to those two sites, and notice a few things: The disparity between Marion County Voters, and those of the rest of the State.

Look at the Guv’s race in terms of how many voted for the Democrats, and how many voted for Mitch. Uh-Oh. Same for McCain.

How is Huckabee beating Ron Paul? And who voted for Romney?

In the 7th at this moment, David O is suprisingly close to Woody Meyers, but both are behind Andre, and Center is still out there. Carson is probably the winner there. What if… David or Woody had dropped out?

Polls are staying open an hour late in Obama Country in Northwest Indiana. Foul Cries, Clintons?

Don’t Get Too Excited…

May 6th, 2008 by spangle-wxnt

Remember, In Indiana, Center Township’s precincts are always the last to be counted. Obama has a strong base of support here due to the large number of the educated, the middle-class, and African-Americans. Northwest Indiana is not in yet either.

Does Indiana Matter?

May 6th, 2008 by spangle-wxnt

A quick thought… Indiana and North Carolina vote today. If the pundits predict correctly, HRC will win here, and Barack will win N.C. If this happens, then the race goes on until the convention. I guess we don’t matter as much as we thought.

It’s still been exciting to watch the spectacle. Although I am looking towards a nap tomorrow! :)

Newt, Burton, Term Limits…

May 6th, 2008 by spangle-wxnt

Ten Years ago today….

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/stories/burton050798.htm

There’s an article from the Washington Post from May 7, 1998, referring to events from May 6, 1998. Newt Gingrich calls Dan Burton an embarrassment:

”This contrast was evident during the GOP’s closed conference meeting yesterday, when Gingrich apologized to his colleagues for how staffers distributed the tapes on Friday. When Burton shot back that he was not embarrassed, according to members who attended the meeting, Gingrich responded, ‘Then I’m embarrassed for you, I’m embarrassed for myself, and I’m embarrassed for the conference at the circus that went on at your committee.’”

Hopefully the voters of the 5th District will agree with Newt today, even if it is delayed by a decade.

Now, why do I feel this way? There comes a point in time where a politician or leader stops working for reform, and starts working to retain power. Bart Peterson was this way. Julia Carson was this way. Dan Burton is this way. Steve Buyer is this way. And I find this attitude towards the job of Congressman disgraceful. This is special honor. It is not yours. It is ours, and it should be treated with respect.

The Founders of our Country were concerned with Public Servants being disinterested, meaning no other interest than serving the people.

I can stand Republican. I can stand Democrat. I can stand Libertarian, but I can’t stand comfortable and entitled.

Where’s Dan Burton?

Country doesn’t Equal Racist!

May 2nd, 2008 by spangle-wxnt

Two Problems with this NYT story:

1. Broad Ripple in the middle of a weekday isn’t really a great representation of Indiana. The Broad Ripple White Liberals are a rare breed in this state. Most people are normal. So I really don’t think this story should be taken seriously.

2. Second, the White Liberal arrogance is showing through in this story. They make a point that most unsophisticated country bumpkins are looking for a reason not to vote for a black guy. Country-folk and Rednecks are not racists. In fact, I have met more racists in metropolitan areas then in the country. Just because you have to drive to see your neighbors, it does not mean you are a racist.

And if they are racist, they are not looking for a reason NOT to vote for a Black man, they have it! His skin! Racisim is fairly easy to spot in the country. It’s a badge of honor in some, but in most, racisim is deplorable. It’s sad that the rebel flag flying jerks in the country give the truly good hearted country-folk a bad name.

At some point, the person who says, “People in rural areas are looking for a reason not to vote for a black candidate” need to examine their own heart.

People interviewed in Indianapolis say the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.’s highly publicized comments, and the responses that have followed, will have little bearing on their vote.
